Beyond Borders with Olaf Groth Building a future together

Discussing the rapidly changing global business landscape, Olaf shares his insights on how students can stay ahead. How do you envision the world to look like in the next 20 years? How much will it change in your opinion? There’s only one thing certain and that is the fact that our world will exhibit more not less uncertainty. Much of this will be driven by technologies–such as AI, autonomous vehicles, 3D printing 0r genetic engineering–climate change, migration, terrorism, and cybersecurity or lack thereof. Geopolitical conflict will also stay with us and potentially escalate regionally. While this may sound like an increasingly unpleasant scenario, I do not see it that way. All of this volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) creates a tremendous opportunity for humankind everywhere to shape the future and create more opportunity. Rather than protecting old models that are under attack, let’s design new ones that lead to better lives. -Professor Olaf Groth For instance, automation threatens parts of many types of jobs. We don’t know exactly which or how many or when. But it’s safe to say that the impact will be felt substantially. Yet, rather than giving in to that possible impact, let’s get ahead of it and decide what future we want. What kinds of new jobs can we design? Are there new models of working, learning and earning? Can we increase the sense of passion, purpose and meaning people feel as they work, learn and earn? Rather than protecting old models that are under attack, let’s design new ones that lead to better lives. How should students prepare to be a future leader? What key skills will be in demand? You should prepare yourself near-term with foundational competencies that will last you a lifetime and with longer-term modular â€Å"up-skilling† that will help you navigate and pivot quickly as you hit challenges or roadblocks in life. The foundational competencies are hard (functional, technical) and soft (interpersonal) ones and many of them require in-person huddling and presence in the same locations with other people. On the â€Å"harder† side, those include strategic-, scientific-, design-, systems-, futures- and critical thinking, and creative problem-solving, as well as basic financial and data science literacy. On the â€Å"softer side† they include storytelling, team dynamics, cross-cultural management, negotiation and coaching, an execution mindset and the navigation of political organizations and processes. Then augment that foundation over time with smaller skill qualifications as you need to pivot in your career, e.g. nano-qualifications to provide know-how in certain technology spaces. Other nano-qualifications could include deep-dives into human psychology, group processes, or specific geographic or cultural identity issues. Both of these facets will help you position robustly for a future that will require you to exercise left and right brains together, i.e. bring both a healthy dose of creativity and analysis to your work as you design and execute projects for, with and through others and the machines. What are some of the challenges the new generation will face in the future? And how will this impact student learning?   The biggest challenge for young talent is the uncertainty and non-linearity of personal development paths and careers. Those uncertainties range from the impact of AI, blockchain, and automation on working, learning and earning; others include global geo-economic and geopolitical crises and the trends on fragmentation versus integration, yet others include climate change and migration patterns. Individuals, much like organizations have to reflect on the emerging picture often and then navigate flexibly. That means changing and upgrading oneself continuously in smaller â€Å"bite-size† chunks. -Professor Olaf Groth I’m also seeing the rise of the career portfolio. Whereby more and more blue chip professionals maintain an array of projects and professional relationships, without always having the security of a full time employment contract. African American hair has so much diversity and flexibility, throughout many years of oppression and hardships they have chosen to alter their natural texture to fit into â€Å"white† standards of beauty. Often feeling the pressures to fit into society, many of these people will purposely damage and harm themselves with a chemical substance called a relaxer. It is important that the millions of women who live their lives solely based on outward appearances know that it is normal to want to feel accepted, but doing so at the sake of your health is not worth it. Traditionally African American hair has and still is the subject of criticism. The constant criticism is not only racially insensitive, it leaves millions of young girls and women feelings self conscious about the way they were born into the world. Many women would disagree when I say that relaxers are extremely damaging. Relaxers contain unnatural ingredients that can greatly damage your scalp and can give you hair loss . A young women stated that â€Å"I recall getting my hair chemically straightened and feeling the chemicals burning my scalp. I would cough because the scent of the fumes was so strong and irritated my throat, yet I continued to chemically straighten my hair during most of high school. Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) is the pro bono organization which is mentioned in the said case. The said organization provides free legal aid to needy individuals who cannot afford hiring lawyers or seeking their advice. However, being a non-profit organization, the said organization suffers many issues. The organization is situated in a very small property just having four offices and a small waiting room which gets crowded with many clients waiting for their turn to receive legal aid. The said waiting room has no air conditioning which leads to a very uncomfortable environment for the clients waiting (Casmir, 2013). Additionally, clients coming with appointments are preferred over walk in clients who get frustrated with the long waiting hours. Being a non-profit organization which provides free legal aid, funding the said organization is a major concern. Additionally, there are many more defects and issues in the internal management of the Northern County Legal Services (NCLS). The chairs for the staff and volunteers are very uncomfortable; the office being small one office is at times shared by three to four volunteers. Additionally, incomplete paperwork, lack of scheduling skills in the staff and not filing timely are certain other internal issues which the organization and the staff deal with. Moreover, volunteers are required to work on laws in which they do not specialize leading to many mistakes. For example, a volunteer specializing in family law fills incomplete housing intake forms. The internal management of the Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) has to get more organized as many staff and volunteers are confused about what is urgent case and where to place the urgent files for their head to review (Frederickson Ghere, 2013). 2. Ethics are very important to incorporate in routine and work life. Therefore, all organization, irrespective of its structure requires adopting certain ethics. Ethics are principals and standard of conduct which an organization has to maintain while working and operating. The said ethics are to be formulated in a form of a code and are to be followed by every individual working in the organization. In the present case, Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) should adopt many ethical conducts which will help them achieve organized manner of working and customer satisfaction (Cooper, 2012). To start with, the Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) should incorporate a customer friendly approach where clients are to be called at the office only on appointments which will avoid client who get mad and furious due to long waiting hours. Additionally, many changes can be adopted to make the internal management more organized in the Northern County Legal Services (NCLS). Many training progr ammes should be adopted to inculcate helping environment in the organization where employees and volunteers have no issues in filing motions made by someone else and helping volunteers who do not specialize in laws which the Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) deal with. The staff and volunteers in the Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) should be more passionate about their work and about helping the needy individuals who cannot afford lawyers (Weisz, 2012). The head of the Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) named Julie requires to help and supervise the working of volunteers by making them learn to help each other and clear doubts of confused volunteers (Pavlovich Krahnke, 2012). 3. The Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) provide pro bono legal services to needy individuals. However, certain recommendations can help the said organization become more successful and organization. To start with in my opinion, all clients should be provided legal aid only on appointment. This will not over crowd the small office of Northern County Legal Services (NCLS) which will in return keep the clients happy as waiting period to meet lawyers will be reduced. Additionally, certain changes in the internal management of the organization will create a more comfortable working environment where departments as per specializing of volunteers should be establishes and volunteers specializing in housing law should deal with housing intake forms and volunteers specializing in family law should handle matters in connection domestic violence. The organization can conduct certain training seminars where volunteers are given advice to work collectively helping one another which will incr ease their legal knowledge. As the volunteers working in the said organization are law students, certain experienced lawyers are to be appointed who can supervise and clear all the law related doubts of the volunteers (Bell, Taylor Driscoll, 2012).
